Carbyon’s Challenge

Carbyon develops equipment to filter CO2 from the air, to be stored underground or converted it into alternatives to fossil fuel-based products.

The Dutch company is seen as one of most promising technology providers for large-scale carbon removal. Founded by Hans De Neve in 2019, Carbyon uses a patented, ultra-fast capturing technique to reach an industry leading low cost-per-ton of CO2 captured.

Carbyon was determined to make their process for direct air capture of CO2 more energy-efficient. They asked for ExoMatter’s support in identifying inorganic materials with an energy demand below a certain limit.

Saving Time in the Lab with ExoMatter

ExoMatter provided quantum-chemical simulation data for almost 5,000 materials, leveraging the result of ~10 Mio. CPU-hours by scientists around the world. Machine Learning was used for solubility calculations.
  • “As researchers, we spend uncountable hours on searching the literature for materials candidates, gathering data on them, and testing them in the lab. We were impressed to see the data filtered from 1M+ materials in one place, and I particularly liked the direct integration of literature and patent references.”

90 new materials candidates were identified, saving Carbyon 6-12 months of laboratory work. Some of the identified materials had an energy demand 6-7 times lower than the defined maximum value.
  • “We were impressed to receive first results less than a month after the kick-off. This is a tremendous way to speed up materials research.”

“In our research projects, we spend a lot of time on materials screening. Much of that is based on manual research and trial & error. By working together with ExoMatter, we can spend more time on the actual implementation of our ideas and accelerate our research significantly. ”
